Cancelling Vodafone contract
I am one of those strange people who (for the last year) has been carrying around 2 mobile phones. I found myself traveling a lot last year and I wanted to keep on top of my email without having to get my laptop out all the time. I had a Nokia 6680 with Orange and I used it for calls, messaging and as a Bluetooth modem with my Macbook Pro. BUT, it was awful at email!!
So I needed a solution - Blackberry of course! I couldn’t get one with Orange so I popped to the local Vodafone shop and picked up a Blackberry 7100 with just an email tariff. Worked great for the last year.
Now I have a Sony Ericsson k800i on Orange instead of the Nokia 6680 and the k800i is pretty good at email so I can cancel the Blackberry.
I looked on the back of my Vodafone bill to get the number to call customer services and cancel the contract but all the phone numbers were 0870 numbers. What a swizz! So I emailed them quoting my mobile number and asked how I go about cancelling my contract.
2 days later, I got a letter saying that my account has been “terminated” (nice word). There was no “Thank you for your custom.”, “Can we persuade you to stay?” Just termination!
The really worrying part is that I just cancelled a mobile contract with no authentication check or anything!! I wonder if I can do this with any phone number?? Maybe I should try it? - only kidding.
It just seems strange to me that all it takes is an email quoting a mobile number to terminate a contract - seems a bit of a bad security situation really.
That’s it on this subject. Maybe I’ll post a review of the Blackberry device in the next few days.

What email address did you use? They assured me when I called that they needed a signature to cancel the contract.
Thanks for reading John!
I just sent the email from my normal business email account to the email address on my Vodafone bill. I expected to be asked for a signature but obviously not.
I called vodafone about cancelling my contract a few days ago and I was told I have to send a letter to the address on the back of my bill giving 30 days notice. Yet again this seems like a bit of a swizz to get more money out me!
what address do you write to vodafone at to cancel your contract????
Thanks for the comment john. According to a previous comment the address should be on the back of your Vodafone bill.
I don’t know the address myself as I didn’t have to use it.
Cheers, Stuart.
iv had my vodafone contract now for over 3 years, i tried to cancel 6 months ago, they said i had to send a letter, which i did, but vodafone have no trace of the letter (yeah rite)
i then got a letter from phonesforu (they have cancelation letters) and sent that to vodafone 6 weeks ago, i recieved a bill as normal so i called vodafone waited 20 mins in a que for them to tell me they have not recieved the letter!

So do you think that i should email vodafone now telling them i want to end my contract and then also send a letter as definite confirmation!?! Do you still need to cancel if you are getting a new phone to replace?
Hi Rachel,
It looks like the best thing to do is to give them a ring and make a good note of who you speak to and what they tell you to do. I imagine (from other comments) that you will need to put it in writing and it may be best to send it recorded or special delivery so it can be traced.
I hope this helps.
Stuart.
